GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Dance Technique Classes

  • Appropriate dance attire must be worn at all times. (Street wear is not permitted)
  • Sweatpants, pajama bottoms, shorts, tee shirts, tank tops, or sweatshirts are not appropriate dance attire and will not be permitted in class, unless otherwise noted.
  • Hair must be tightly secured and off the face. Ballet 2, Ballet 3, Pre Pointe, and Pointe students must have hair in a bun.
  • Jewelry (rings, necklaces, wrist and ankle bracelets, dangling earrings, nose and lip rings, watches, fitness bands) is not permitted in class
  • Boys may wear warm up pants, rip stop nylon pants, shorts and solid color t-shirt.
  • Leave bags, clothing, books, cell phones and other personal items in the changing room while in class
  • Appropriate footwear MUST be worn for each class.
    1. All taps must be secured on the shoe
    2. Ballet slippers must fit appropriately – snug, but not hindering movement
    3. All pointe shoes must be sewn and tied correctly

BALLET

Classical ballet is a structured and formalized dance form characterized by its graceful movements, precise technique, and storytelling though dance. It emphasizes balance, symmetry, and alignment, with dancers performing in ballet slippers and then pointe shoes.  Classical ballet is built on a vocabulary of movement such as plies, pirouettes, and jetes, and is often accompanied by orchestral music.  Iconic works like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker showcase ballet’s focus on narrative and emotional expression.  The discipline blends athleticism with artistry. 

            

Beginner Ballet (Ages 5-8)

Focus on the basics of ballet and skills needed to perform ballet moves and positions. 

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers (leather soled).  Skirts are optional.

 

Ballet 1 (Ages 7-10)

Focus on basic ballet terms and positions.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers (leather soled).  Skirts are optional. 

                       Hair is to be secured in a bun. 

 

Ballet 2 (Ages 10-13)

For students with some ballet experience.  Focus on intermediate ballet dance moves, positions, and terminology.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers (leather, split soled).  Skirts are optional.

                       Hair is to be secured in a bun.

 

Ballet 3 (Ages 14-18)

For experienced ballet students.  Focus on turns, leaps, body placement and advanced terminology.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers (leather, split soled).  Skirts are optional.

                       Hair is to be secured in a bun.

 

Adult Ballet (Ages 18 and older)

Learn ballet techniques to tone and lengthen muscles, improve balance and control, while strengthening your body.

                Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement, Ballet Slippers (leather, split soled)

TAP

Tap dance is a rhythmic dance style where dancers create percussive sounds with their feet using special shoes fitted with metal taps on the heel and toe.  It combines elements of dance and music, with intricate footwork and syncopated rhythms that often mimic or complement musical patterns.  Tap dance emphasizes improvisation and individuality while requiring precision and timing.  It is featured in musical theater, film, and many Broadway performances. 

Beginner Tap (Ages 5-8)

Focus on the basics of tap and the skills needed to perform beginning tap steps. 

          Attire: leotard, Tights, Tap Shoes – Can wear booty shorts or leggings

 

Tap 1 (Ages 7-10)

Designed for students with little to no tap experience.  Focus is on basic terms, steps and rhythm.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Tap Shoes – Can wear booty shorts or leggings

 

Tap 2 (Ages 10-13)

For students with some tap experience.  Time steps, combinations, and terminology will be covered.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Tap Shoes – Can wear booty shorts or leggings

 

Tap 3 (Ages 14-18)

For experienced tap dancers.  We will concentrate on tap terms, time steps, and more advanced combination turns.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Tap Shoes – Can wear booty shorts or leggings

 

Adult Tap (Ages 18 and older – Beginners are welcome!)

This class will focus on time steps and rhythms. 

            Attire: Comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement, Tap Shoes

JAZZ

Jazz dance is an energetic and expressive dance style that blends the fluidity of modern dance with the rhythm and syncopation of jazz music.  It emphasizes dynamic movements, isolations,  and sharp, precise steps, often performed with a sense of individuality and emotional expression.  Modern jazz dance is commonly seen in musicals, concert performances, and pop culture, showcasing a mix of elegance, power, and playfulness. 

Jazz (Ages 5-13)

Learn basic and intermediate jazz techniques, turns and jumps.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Jazz Shoes – Can wear booty shorts or leggings

 

LYRICAL/CONTEMPORARY

Lyrical or Contemporary Dance is a fluid and expressive dance style that combines elements of ballet, jazz, and modern dance.  It is characterized by its emotional storytelling, graceful movements, and emphasis on connecting with the music’s lyrics and mood.  Lyrical dance often features flowing transitions, high extensions, and turns, aiming to convey deep feelings and interpret the music’s meaning through movement.  This style focuses on artistry and personal expression. 

  Lyrical/Contemporary (Ages 5-13)

Interpretive, expressive movements set to music.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Jazz or Lyrical Shoes, Bare feet or Sandal Soles (based on the instructor’s discretion – you will be notified upon registration)

 

HIP HOP

 Hip Hop dance is a high-energy, street-style dance form.  It includes a variety of dynamic movements such as popping, locking, breaking, and freestyle improvisation.  Known for its rhythm-driven grooves and emphasis on individuality and self-expression, hip hop dance often incorporates athleticism and intricate footwork.  

  Hip Hop 1 (Ages 5-10)

Dance to fast, upbeat music with street style dance moves.

            Attire: T-shirt, Shorts or Leggings, Hip Hop Sneakers (clean, comfortable sneakers are optional)

 

Hip Hop 2 (Ages 11 – 18)

Dance to fast, upbeat music with street style dance moves. 

     Attire: T-shirt, Shorts or Leggings, Hip Hop Sneakers (clean, comfortable sneakers are optional)

POINTE

Pointe is a specialized form of ballet performed on the tips of the toes using pointe shoes.  It requires exceptional strength, balance, and precision, allowing dancers to create an illusion of weightlessness and elegance..  This demanding technique is introduced only after a dancer has developed sufficient strength and control in their ankles, legs, and core. 

Pre Pointe

Pre Pointe students must be 10 before class starts (unless special permission has been given).  Students must have at least two years of ballet experience and currently be enrolled in a ballet class.

                Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Flats

                Hair is to be secured in a bun.

 

Pointe

Pointe students must have at least three years of ballet experience and show that they have the foot and ankle strength to participate in class.  They must also be currently enrolled in a ballet class.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Pointe Shoes (sewn and tied correctly)

            Hair is to be secured in a bun.

OTHER CLASSES

Pre-Dance (Ages 3-4)

Introduction to basic dance skills and techniques.  This class prepares students to enroll in full length dance classes.

            Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers (leather soled).  Skirts are optional.

 

Stretch (Ages 18 and over)

Learn the basics and benefits of stretching your body for both fitness and mobility. 

Please make sure your instructor knows of any issues or concerns before class.  We will try to make accommodations as necessary.

            Attire: Comfortable clothing, ballet slippers, jazz shoes, or socks

 

Strengthen (At least 10 years old with 2 years of ballet and currently enrolled in Ballet 2 or higher)

This class is designed to teach students to build strength and endurance in preparation for Pointe class.  

           Attire: Leotard, Tights, Ballet Slippers.  Students will also need exercise bands.
